"Is that enough, Mama?"
Rachel Lombardi cast a dark eye on the handiwork of her young son, Logan, her long, silky black hair being picked up and gently caressed by the warm spring breeze. She laughed at what she beheld. The plant Logan had been assigned to water was overflowing onto the brightly-painted wooden porch.
"That's actually a bit too much, sweetie," Rachel giggled. "The plant overflows when it doesn't need any more. Understand?"
Logan frowned at the plant and nodded pensively. "I'll do better next time." He looked around for the next plant to water, and something caught his eye. "Mama, who are those men over there?"
Logan pointed and Rachel glanced in that direction. Although one eye was white from blindness, the black one could see just fine, all things considered, and Rachel instantly recognized the two men walking towards the secluded rural cottage she shared with her son. Two people she was NOT interested in seeing. She fumed. "You go on inside, L
Bo.When Lindsay was born, Bo was there. Standing beside her mother, he was the first thing she ever saw. But he was not her father; her father stood on the other side.
Bo was there until the very moment she died.
The sun shone bright through the windows of her pink-laden room. She loved pink. And black.
“Because Bo is black,” she’d told her parents.
Her imaginary friend, they soon concluded.
“Bo is all black,” she described one night as her father tucked her in, “His skin and his hair and everything. He doesn’t talk a lot.”
Her father frowned.
“He sounds scary.”
“He’s not,” she insisted.
Bo sat on the bed and said nothing.
Her father kissed her good night and turned out the light.
“Why can’t Dad see you?” she asked.
“Are you real?”
“Are you real?” he replied.
“How do you know?”
